Standard buyer overview
When checking a GSX-S1000GX quotation, identify the actual crossover motorcycle and the accessories included with it. The factory product identity may also appear as GSX-S1000XRRE in technical material, while the public product name is GSX-S1000GX. That factory-family reference is useful for matching documents, but does not turn every brochure-year code into the build year of the supplied stock. The configuration described here lists a 999 cc inline four, 232 kg kerb weight and a nineteen-litre tank. Start from those local identifiers and the actual equipment on the dealer floor before comparing prices with another Suzuki touring proposition.
The four-cylinder engine uses liquid cooling and a six-speed gearbox, with a wet multi-plate clutch and chain final drive. Suzuki's assist/slipper clutch description is part of the broader GX equipment story. The engine layout is one reason a rider might prefer this model to a parallel-twin middleweight or a V-twin V-Strom. That preference should be tested through the controls you will use: throttle response, clutch reach and gear selection on an appropriate demonstration. The motorcycle is substantial enough that familiarity at low speed deserves attention alongside interest in its larger-engine performance potential.
The electronic suspension package is a major reason to treat the GX as a separate purchase rather than a styling derivative. Have the dealer demonstrate the available suspension and preload choices and explain how the settings relate to rider, passenger and luggage use. Retained suspension travel is 150 mm at the front and rear. If the motorcycle is supplied with luggage or other accessories, establish the intended setup for that arrangement within the applicable limits. Electronic adjustment is useful only when the owner understands what it controls. It cannot replace a published load limit or justify carrying more because the bike can alter its suspension settings.
The 845 mm seat should be checked with your normal riding footwear and posture. At 232 kg kerb weight, the GX also warrants a realistic assessment of parking movements, including reversing out of a bay and supporting the bike on an uneven surface. The 1,470 mm wheelbase and 155 mm ground clearance provide chassis context, but neither tells you whether a particular driveway will be straightforward. Consider the additional width of any fitted luggage when planning storage. A road-travel motorcycle spends time stopped and loaded as well as moving, so those practical details belong in the buying decision.
The wheel and tyre package is road oriented: 17-inch wheels with 120/70ZR17 front and 190/50ZR17 rear tyres. The retained brake dimensions are twin 310 mm front discs and a 240 mm rear disc, with Motion Track braking described in the factory equipment. Do not apply V-Strom DE tyre or suspension assumptions merely because both models may appear on a touring shortlist. The GX has its own fitment and instructions. Confirm replacement tyre ratings and the correct cold pressures with the supplied documentation, and ask the dealer to explain the warning indications associated with the braking system.
The bi-directional quickshifter and smart cruise control are useful features to have explained together because Suzuki describes their coordinated operation. The 6.5-inch colour TFT is the interface through which the owner reads information and accesses settings, so try the switchgear with gloves and inspect the screen from your natural seated position. A larger screen is only one part of usability; menu clarity and your ability to reach the controls matter too. Any phone or navigation requirement should be checked against the actual supplied functions. Do not treat the display size as evidence of an unlimited set of connected features.
A nineteen-litre tank provides a specific capacity for comparison with other road-travel motorcycles. The European WMTC figure of 6.2 L/100 km and 144 g/km CO2 remains Equivalent information here, rather than a South African homologation claim. It should not be converted into a guaranteed range or a fixed monthly fuel budget for a particular rider. For trips, consider actual refuelling opportunities and the luggage arrangement. Factory photography may include optional equipment, so have bags, mounts, screens or protection accessories itemised. The cost of those items can materially change the comparison between two otherwise similar advertised motorcycle prices.
The strongest reason to choose this GX configuration is a clear preference for its inline-four road-crossover package, electronic suspension and travel controls. A V-Strom 1050DE may be a better comparison if a larger front wheel and a different adventure-oriented chassis are central to your use, while a Hayabusa offers another approach to a large faired road motorcycle. Obtain the South African warranty and service terms for the stock you intend to buy and the way you intend to use it. Select the GX after confirming fit and equipment, with the quotation describing a complete motorcycle rather than an assumed collection of brochure accessories.
Factory colour references include Metallic Triton Blue, Glass Sparkle Black and Pearl Mat Shadow Green. Confirm the colour on the actual South African stock before treating a brochure palette as a list of immediately available motorcycles.
